What exactly is dassie?
dassie is a smartwatch platform for South African primary schools, Grade R–7. It combines a kids’ smartwatch, the School Portal for your staff, a family app for parents and tools for your tuckshop, all built around rules the school controls.
How much does dassie cost?
We quote per school, based on your size and what you need. Book a demo and we’ll put a quote together for you.
What can the school see?
Your team sees learners on the live map only while they’re inside your school’s boundary during school hours, and receives SOS alerts raised on the grounds in that time. Once a child leaves the gate or school is out, they drop off your map.
Can teachers stop watches from distracting learners?
Yes. Watch rules let you switch off voice notes, collectables and payments by zone (like classrooms) and by time window (like 08:00–13:30). SOS and GPS always stay on.
What happens when a learner presses SOS?
If it’s on the grounds during school hours, the alert appears in the School Portal straight away with the learner and where they are. Your team works through it: acknowledge, respond, resolve.
Can we message learners?
Yes. Broadcasts go straight to watches, to one child, a grade or the whole school. Send a reminder, an event, or a big “well done!”.
Can we message parents too?
Yes. The same broadcast can go to parents, to one child’s family, a grade’s parents or every family in the school. It arrives in the dassie parent app, alongside everything else parents already use. Send it now or schedule it.
Where is the data stored?
In South Africa. Nothing goes through the watch supplier’s servers, and suppliers have no remote access. See Privacy & security for the full picture.
Where do the watches come from?
The watch is supplied through dassie as part of your school’s rollout, so every watch is set up to work with the platform and your rules.
Do we have to manage SIM cards or data?
No. Every watch comes with a built-in eSIM, already loaded. Parents manage and pay for the data in their app with automatic monthly top-ups, so your office never deals with SIM cards or airtime.
Can the watches use our school Wi-Fi?
Yes, if you allow it. Watches on the grounds can join the school Wi-Fi, which saves families’ mobile data. Either way, data is reserved for GPS, so learners stay on your live map.
How does a rollout work?
Three steps: provision each watch in the School Portal, link it to a pupil, then invite the parents. See how it works.
Can the tuckshop use it too?
Yes. The tuckshop gets its own portal and a mobile till. The cashier scans a QR code on the learner’s watch, and each parent’s limits and blocked items are checked automatically. Try the demo.
Can I buy a dassie watch for my child?
dassie is rolled out through schools, so the school provisions the watch and invites you to the family app. If your school isn’t on dassie yet, ask your school. We’ll help you write the letter.
Can the school track my child after school?
No. The school only sees your child on the school grounds during school hours. Outside the gate or after hours, only your family can see them.
Does the school get health data or hear voice notes?
No. Health data and voice notes are only for family and approved friends. They’re never shared with the school.
What do I see in the family app?
Your family map with battery and signal, SOS alerts, voice notes, friend approvals, chores, calendar reminders, tuckshop limits, school broadcasts, and your watch’s data and top-ups.
Will the school message me through dassie?
Yes. The school can send broadcasts to parents: to your family, your child’s grade or the whole school. They arrive in the dassie parent app, next to your child’s map, reminders and tuckshop.
What happens if my child presses SOS?
You’re alerted straight away in the app. Tap “I’m on it” and your child’s watch shows that help is coming.
How do friends work?
Two watches bump together, both sets of parents approve, and then the children can chat. Nobody gets added without both parents saying yes.
Does the watch need a SIM card?
No. Every dassie watch comes with a built-in eSIM, already loaded, so there’s nothing to buy or insert. See how data works.
How does the watch’s data work?
You choose an automatic top-up amount in the app, and it tops up every month. If the everyday data runs out, for things like voice notes, you can top up any time. Some data is always reserved for GPS, so your child’s location keeps working even when the rest is used up.
Can the watch use Wi-Fi?
Yes. The watch can join your home Wi-Fi, and the school Wi-Fi when the school allows it. On Wi-Fi it saves your mobile data.
How do I pay for data and the tuckshop?
Add your payment details once in the app. That saved card pays for data top-ups and for tuckshop purchases, within the limits you set.
Can I control tuckshop spending?
Yes. Set a daily, weekly or monthly limit, block items like fizzy drinks, and choose to be asked before extras. You can approve a treat from your phone.
Will the watch distract my child in class?
No. In class the watch follows the school’s rules. Distracting features can be switched off during lessons, while SOS and GPS stay on.
Where is my family’s data kept?
In South Africa, stored securely. The watch supplier’s servers aren’t used, and suppliers have no remote access.
Is there a cost for parents?
You pay for your child’s mobile data through the monthly top-up amount you choose, and for tuckshop purchases, both with the card you save in the app. Anything else depends on how your school rolls dassie out. Your school will let you know when they invite you.
